Berry's Walk-Off Sends Queen Creek Past Tucson in Play-In Game

Berry's Walk-Off Sends Queen Creek Past Tucson in Daytime Play-In Game

QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. — Queen Creek advanced to the 6A state tournament with a dramatic walk-off win over Tucson in a back-and-forth daytime play-in game.

The Bulldogs were aided by a good outing from starting pitcher Mason Lizzaraga, who kept Tucson in line early on. His demeanor and command on the mound allowed Queen Creek to stay in the zone as the two squads went back and forth.

Offensively, both squads continued to be aggressive in the plate, with clutch runs scoring throughout the game. Queen Creek responded each time Tucson threatened, never letting up by continuing to put pressure on with timely hits of their own.

In the ninth inning's bottom, Kobe Gomez reached base and into scoring position. With the game on the line, Jet Berry delivered the game-winning shot — a sharp walk-off single that scored Gomez and sent the Queen Creek dugout spilling onto the field in celebration.

The victory sends Queen Creek to the No. 8 seed in the 6A state tournament at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
