AIA to the Rescue: How the AIA is doing its part in recent flooding.

Most folks think of Friday night lights, bracket championships, and the heartbeat of high school athletics across the state when they envision the Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA). Beyond the scoreboards and rankings, the AIA continues to demonstrate that its mission is well beyond competition. It's about community.

Following the catastrophic flooding that recently devastated the Globe and Miami communities, AIA's Student Leadership Advisory Committee (SLAC) has come to the rescue of organizing a fundraiser to support those affected by the disaster. Their objective: to rally the Arizona high school community in a show of solidarity and sympathy towards fellow Arizonians who are in need.

To assist in increasing the effort, State Farm insurance representative and AIA Executive Board member Steve Johnson has pledged to match contributions dollar-for-dollar up to $500, said AIA Communications Director Seth Polansky. The fundraiser will remain open up through Friday, October 24, giving athletes, families, and fans throughout the state a chance to give.

Volunteers willing to assist are able to donate directly through Zelle (details below). All funds raised will be used for local relief efforts to help families and schools rebuild from the flooding.

This initiative speaks to something distinct about sports in Arizona high school: a service culture that pervades the competition. The AIA's focus on leadership and character development isn't solely what happens on the field: it's about preparing kids to know being part of a team also means being present for your community when it's time to act.

From the fields and courts to the flood-stricken streets of Globe and Miami, the AIA remains a force for good in Arizona.
